Do You Have Migraine Headaches or are they Tension-Type?
Are you wondering if the headaches you're suffering with are migraine
headaches? If you would like to know we can probably help you figure
that out. There are some very distinctive characteristics of migraine
headaches that can differentiate them from other types of headaches
such as tension, stress or cluster.
Migraine headaches are more often than not one-sided. This means
that the pain is only on one side of the head. Most often the pain
is felt in the temple region of the head or behind one of the eyes
or ears. They can become severe and disabling. Common symptoms are
nausea, vomiting or sensitivity to light or sound. About 20% of
patients experience an aura, a disturbance in vision that can consist
of bright and blinking colored lights that move across a person's
field of vision.
They can become chronic in nature, meaning they occur on a regular
basis. When they are chronic the patient most commonly experiences
them just once or twice a month. However, in some severe cases they
can occur as often as once or twice a week. They typically affect
people between the ages of 15 and 55 and are much more common in
women than in men. In fact, they affect women about 3 times as often
as men, or about 75% of the time.
About 30 or 40 million Americans suffer with migraines, but they
are far less common than tension headaches. It is estimated that
about 75% of all head aches are tension-type. These are typically
characterized by a dull pain over the entire head while migraines
are usually throbbing in nature and located in one particular spot.
In other words, tension-type head pain is a constant dull pain while
migraine pain usually throbs in the rhythm of a person's pumping
heart.
Chronic tension headaches can occur every single day while chronic
migraines occur less often, usually in the neighborhood of once
a week to once a month. Fatigue and stress can cause both types,
but migraines can be triggered by other factors such as different
types of food and are sometimes helped by eliminating these food
triggers. Foods that may lead to migraines include cheese, alcohol,
MSG (monosodium glutamate), nuts, beans, caffeine, chocolate, onions
and many other foods. Eliminating the food trigger can eliminate
the pain.
Cluster headaches are much less common than either migraines or
tension-type headache pain. Men are about six times more likely
than women to experience cluster headaches. The pain of a cluster
headache typically starts very quickly, without warning, and usually
reaches its peak between two and fifteen minutes.
The pain of a cluster headache can be extremely intense, deep and
explosive. Migraines are usually "pulsing" while clusters
are not. Between 10 and 20 percent of cluster patients have "ice-pick"
pain or "stabbing" pain around the eyes. This intense
stabbing pain typically lasts for only a few seconds, but can occur
several times in succession. When this sudden attack of intense
pain happens it usually means that the cluster headache is near
its end.
For natural headache relief it is often beneficial to relax and
rest on a Soothe-A-Ciser®
Cushion. This can reduce the pressure that is felt in the head.
The Soothe-A-Ciser® is recommended by chiropractors for the
home treatment of headache pain. The Soothe-A-Ciser® can also
help tension headaches or stress
headaches. Reducing stress can go a long way to relieving many
headache symptoms.
